South Mountain
Route 15 south
The town seat of Frederick County is Frederick, which was founded in 1745. Frederick
has numerous self-guiding tours available at the Visitor’s Center located at 19
East Chestnut Street. The oldest house in town, Schifferstadt, was built by Joseph
Brunner in 1756. Archeological artifacts are exhibited in the parlor and the museum
shop at 1110 Rosemont Avenue. Tours of the house, gardens and orchards are available
April to December, Wednesday to Friday from 10 am too 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday
from noon to 4pm. The Historical Society is located at 24 East Church Street in
a restored 1820’s federal style mansion. The building is open for tours Monday through

A few miles east of town stands the oldest known building in the county. The Beatty-Cramer
House was constructed in 1732 by the Widow Beatty. The house, a springhouse and
a smokehouse are being preserved by the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation. Open
for tours from 10 am to 4 pm the first Saturday of every month.
Two Revolutionary War sites of interest are the 1777 Hessian Barracks in town and

Catoctin Furnace, which supplied cannon balls for the Colonies, north off Route
15.
The Furnace is open daily dawn to dusk and is located on Route 806. The barracks
are not open to the public.
Five miles north of Frederick off Route 15, Walkersville has a 1900’s railroad station
and an excursion train that travels eight miles through Maryland farmland and crosses
the Monocacy River. Excursions depart every Saturday and Sunday at 11 am, 1 pm and
3pm from May through October.
Baltimore
Route 140 east
Baltimore is a city with charming ethnic and cultural neighborhoods, historical
sites and Chesapeake Bay dishes. The National [Best Western Westminster - Beatty
Carmer] Aquarium is located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor as is the Maryland Science
Center. The harbor is a National Historic Seaport and features the Pride of Baltimore
II, a replica of an 1812 Clipper topsail schooner. Baltimore is the home of the
Peabody Conservatory of Music, the nation’s oldest music school.
The B&O Railroad Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the history of the railroads
of the mid-Atlantic region. The B&O Railroad Museum is open daily from 10 am to
5 p. except Holidays. Baseball is highlighted with Camden Yards and the nearby the
Babe Ruth Museum, a national historic site.

Route 97 south
Washington D.C. has great historic attractions such as the George Washington’s Mount
Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, Smithsonian Museums, National Museum of Natural
History, the National Art Gallery, and the memorials on the Mall. The nation’s Capitol

York County, PA
Route 94 north
Hanover is located at the intersection of Route 94 and Route 116 in York County.
Hanover has maintained its small town charm with a delightful selection of specialty
shops surrounding its square. Two large food processors, Snyder’s and Utz, are open
for factory tours. Neas House Museum and the Wirt Park Fire Station Museum are both
located downtown. A few blocks to the north is the Eichelberger Performing arts

Codorus State Park

Located in York County twenty miles southeast of Gettysburg on Routes 116, the park
is three miles southeast of Hanover on Route 216. The 3,320 acres of forests create
a contrast to the surrounding Pennsylvania Dutch farmlands. The 1,275-acre Lake
Marburg is popular with fishermen, boaters and swimmers. Codorus is also an excellent
place to observe spring and fall migrations of waterfowl and warblers. The park
offers interpretive programs and hikes. Boat rentals are available and a restaurant
is convenient to the park.
